With summer coming to a close, autumn is just around the corner. When you were a kid growing up, did you ever try to catch a leaf when it was falling to the ground or blowing in the wind? Not an easy task, but it can be a fun game if you challenge.
Jesus invites you & me to follow Him, and yet, He compares His guiding Spirit to the wind (John 3:8). When one eager follower expresses his commitment to the pursuit, Jesus responds, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20). His description makes the act of following Jesus a real challenge, and the journey sounds about as unpredictable as attempting to catch a leaf tossed by the wind.
As you and I consider the exhilarating adventure of following Jesus as individuals, as families and as a church, let’s seek to encourage each other in this endeavor. While the direction and details may seem elusive, the journey is just as important as the destination when our focus must remain fixed on the leader – Jesus Christ. At the same time, let’s be cautious not to allow our gaze to be swayed by the unpredictable winds of life and miss out on all the Jesus has in store along the way.
