What does it mean to love God and to worship Him? Years ago I recall a high school friend and I listening to a youth worker volunteer talk about worship, and the ability to focus on God. She spoke of raising our hands to the Lord as a symbol of surrender. She encouraged us to close our eyes, so as not to be distracted by others. My friend told me later that when he was at church, he was trying to practice what we had learned as he worshipped God on a Sunday morning..., which he said was going well until the unexpected happened. When he was deep in worship on the following Sunday morning at church, trying to focus on God with an openness to His Spirit, he finally got the courage to raise his hands in worship as a symbol of surrender. As he lifted his right hand he became distracted when his finger found itself in the left nostril of the man to his right. Not only did this kill the spirit of worship, but it spoiled it for the man next to him as well. Hardly what he had in mind.
What is your experience with loving God and focusing on Him in worship?
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship." (Romans 12:1)
